The kitchen tap is easily one of the most-used items in any kitchen. That means it is especially important to make the right decision for your lifestyle and design scheme. When choosing your taps there are a number of things to consider.

Your water pressure will have a significant impact on the system that works best for you. If you have a low-pressure water system, then get some advice from us on how to ensure a steady flow of water. If this isn't a problem then your choices are wider but we'll still be happy to offer an expert opinion. 

The other significant consideration is the type of sink you are planning to have. These will come pre-drilled with holes for taps - either one or two - and this will define the taps you need.

If you choose a one-holed fixture then you need either a monobloc tap with a single spout, and the flow of water regulated by the handles or levers on either side or a one-handled, single-lever tap. If you have two holes than traditional pillar taps are easy to fit. The other option is a bridge tap which has water flowing in through both tap holes in the sink but a single outlet.

Mixer taps

Kitchen mixer taps are a stylish and practical addition to any sink or basin setup. They are supplied as a single unit which connects hot and cold inlets. They work by combining flows of both hot and cold water to let you choose the exact water temperature you want.

Pillar taps are often a cost-effective but stylish choice and can work in any design scheme. You can choose between a range of lever, cross or knob-shaped handles to fit in with your kitchen’s look and accessories.

Taps with pull-out sprays

A tap with a pull-out spray is an excellent choice for any confident, or aspiring, kitchen cooks. These useful additions to any kitchen help you reach all parts of your sink, allowing for easy cleaning of both the sink area, the food you’re preparing, or your dishes and utensils.

These work by having a tap fixture at the end of a long flexible hose which you can pull out to use to deliver water as needed. Choose between systems that have the tap set to a rinsing spray for washing delicate fruit or vegetables, or a professional spray option whose temperature can be adjusted. These fixtures are not just highly useful, but also stylish and are available in a variety of lengths. 

Hansgrohe looks to integrate these functions into their Focus range. Boiling water taps

Choosing to install a boiling water tap is a great decision if you want to save time when cooking or making hot drinks. They work by having an internal boiler set-up with a varying capacity that heats water as and when you need it so you can instantly have small or large amounts of boiling water always on-hand. These simple, stylish, and space-saving units can easily and discretely integrate into your kitchen set-up. 

These are not only functional but also money-saving, as you don’t need to boil an entire kettle for a single cup of tea. Manufacturers say it costs just 1p per litre to use a boiling water tap. By comparison, a 1.5-litre kettle costs 2.5p to boil. It also saves you the time you would be waiting for your water to heat up – leaving you to get on with something else instead. 

Grohe has a fantastic selection of boiling water taps in their Grohe Red range. These fittings are available in two sizes of taps and can replace your regular kitchen tap. Like many of these systems, these systems come fitted with a child lock to avoid accidents and an internal filter to ensure the water produced is of the best quality.

Filtered water taps

Filtered water taps are a brilliant solution for those of us that prefer the clean, crisp taste of water that has been cleared of its impurities. By choosing to install a filtration system directly onto your water supply you are ensuring everyday impurities such as lead, copper and aluminium are easily removed from the water that comes from your tap. At the same time, water filtration leaves behind essential minerals that benefit your health.

Traditional kitchen taps

Kitchen pillar taps (pair)

Kitchen pillar taps are an elegant twist on the traditional tap design when you are installing a two-hole sink. This style still offers two separate faucets for water of different temperatures but brings the option of raising the water outlet above the kitchen work surface. 

That’s because they have longer entry points for water into the tap faucet, meaning the outlet sits higher over the sink area. This could be as simple as an aesthetic choice, but the longer the tap you choose, the larger the items you will be able to put in your sink.
