Wetroom flooring in the UK is a little different from on the continent. Generally, most northern European homes have concrete floors and were built with a wetroom style in mind. 

In the UK we have more rooms with floorboards to contend with and adapt into bathroom spaces. Wetroom flooring options do exist for the UK market, we are confident we can help you find a suitable wetroom product for any property in the UK!

Flooring for wetroom showers

So, you are in the market for waterproof wetroom flooring for your new shower wetroom. Where do you start? Well, your first port of call is to identify what kind of floor substructure you have. If this is a renovation you may need to lift the tiles or existing floor layer (vinyl, or god forbid a dated bathroom with a soggy old carpet!) and have a good look with the help of your builder or contractor.

The next step is to work out how much if not all the rooms’ surfaces you want to “tank” / waterproof. Are you waterproofing the floor? If you are creating a shower area you will need to waterproof the walls in addition. Take your measurements, in cm or meters. Most packs are listed in meters squared.

You can create niches with wedi. These are tiled recessed areas in you shower wall that can be used for decoration. Yet, they can also be for handy storage of shampoos and soaps, keeping your new wetroom neat and tidy! 

How to install wetroom flooring

This will depend specifically on the brand you choose to go with. Different manufacturer’s designs will have different requirements. There will also be variables for the type of floor you have underneath such as concrete or floorboards.

Give yourself enough time and prepare your materials and tools in advance so you won’t have to rush out halfway through the job to get a piece of equipment. A good example of a really easy-to-install pack would be the wedi Fundo top, this is a ready-to-fit surface that works with the Fundo shower system.

Fit the Fundo base section, this is a complete system including drainage. Once the Fundo shower base is installed you are ready to add the Fundo top component. Apply the wedi 610 adhesive to the Fundo floor element. A pattern is provided in the instructions to give the best grip (you don’t have to be Michelangelo, this is just a grid pattern across the top).

Finally, simply lay the Fundo top neatly to the edges. Cover the top with the protective cardboard provided and evenly weigh down the area while it dries and sets into place. The finishing touch is then to silicone the transitions to the wall and floor tiling joints.

The Aqua4ma system by Kudos is made from a rigid UPVC panel which is lightweight. It forms a watertight seal when joined with Aqua4ma solvent weld “grabber.” Which is a waterproof adhesive for the boards, binding the panels together. 

If you opt for one of their Floor4ma packs a metal tray waste and panels for tiling are included. A vinyl waste can be specified and skirting packs in addition.

Impey wetrooms

Impey offers a variety of quality wetroom building products. Including water guard wetroom tanking, glass wetroom screens, and underfloor heating. 

Impey WaterGuard is a self-adhesive waterproof tanking membrane at 1mm in thickness. It is designed for walls and floors and is compatible with powdered flexible wetroom grouts and adhesives.

It is rubber coated and comes in a roll. It doesn’t require any curing time and you can tile straight onto it after laying. Which can save installation time compared to some paint on waterproofing products sold elsewhere.

You can buy these in a kit for example the 5-meter square floor kit comes with 500ml of BAL primer, jointing tape, corners, butyl sealant. Grout and tiles will be required in addition.

Tips on creating your new wetroom
